New Delhi airport is 16km from New Delhi city centre. The transfer time depends heavily on the time of day and level of traffic; if you’re unfortunate to land at rush hour it could be up to an hour. However at night time it may only be 20 minutes. For most travellers New Delhi is their first experience of India, and their first encounter with the sights and sounds of this magical country.

Pre booked airport transfers

Pre booked Taxi:

When pre booking a taxi for your airport transfer, the driver will be waiting for you at the arrival gate. He will probably have a moustache, and definitely have a board with your name. Eager drivers will usually offer to carry your luggage. Having a friendly face meet you also ensures you don’t get hassled by the touts in and around the airport.

Most prepaid taxis take 4 passengers and are a Tata or Toyota estate vehicles and will be air conditioned. A transfer in a vehicle like this should cost around Rs 300 – 400 (€5-7). Companies in Delhi also have fleets of luxury vehicles like limousines and Mercedes Benz. These will cost significantly more. All drivers doing airport transfers will speak good English and will usually be talkative and eager to please.

Organising an airport transfer on arrival at New Delhi Airport

Taxi on arrival:

Taxi companies have stands in New Delhi airport where you can pre pay for a taxi on arrival. The most trustworthy stand is considered to be the Delhi Police prepay stand. After paying you will receive a receipt detailing the vehicle to take. Touts will be waiting around the airport trying to get you to sign up to a particular taxi service. Only give your receipt to the driver when you reach your destination.

Flag down a taxi:

As a fresh arrival to India with your entire luggage it’s not advisable to use a non pre pay taxi. There are countless reports of scams involving these taxis, ranging from misunderstanding destinations and crazy overcharging to more serious rip offs.

Using Public Transport:

New Delhi airport is well connected by public transport, however these services can be very over-crowded. Be sure to know exactly where you’re going as the streets are confusing for newcomers. The most efficient public transport is the Delhi Airport Metro Express, a new train line that connects to New Delhi Railway Station. From here you can then take the metro to your final destination. If you value space you should try and avoid the metro during rush hour times.
