Taxis and Cabs in Shanghai City: comparison and prices in Shanghai

Shanghai is the world"s largest city and has the kind of over-crowded traffic problems you would expect from a place with 23 million people. With lights flashing everywhere and 8 lane streets turning into car parks it can be frustrating. But taxis are adept at knowing short cuts and streets to avoid and are a cheap convenient option of getting across the city.

Private taxis / minicabs

There are many private taxi companies in Shanghai and a few have tailored their services for foreign business and travel visitors. These companies provide either English speaking drivers, or have a direct radio link to an English speaking translator. If you have ever tried to flag down a non pre-booked taxi in Shanghai you will appreciate the benefits of having an English speaking driver pick you up. Cars are normally modern and comfortable, but not luxurious. They will either be Chinese or Japanese brand vehicles. Almost all taxis use the same metre and rates are approximately €2 for the first 3km and €1 for every 3kms thereafter

Flagged Down Taxis

It"s “ninghai” you shout. Or is “ninghhhaai?” Perhaps “ninghaa?” Or “ninghai,” wait we already said that one. Getting a taxi in Shanghai is blighted by one major problem; communication between a driver who doesn"t any speak English and a customer who can"t speak any Chinese. When flagging down a taxi you must either have your destination written down in Chinese symbols, or have it highlighted on a clear map with Chinese road names. Flagged down taxis and pre booked taxis use the same taxi metre.

Taxi in Shanghai

On Shanghai"s busy streets you need to make sure you"re hailing a taxi from either a taxi stand or a place where the taxi can easily stop. Otherwise they will have to drive straight past you. Taxis will have red and green symbols on the roof to show they are a taxi. They will be painted in 2 different colours, with the roof often a different colour from the rest of the vehicle. Different companies have different taxi colours. In general they are all much the same apart from the dark red taxis which have a bad reputation for ripping off tourists.

Top tips for getting a taxi in Shanghai

Write your destination down:

Get your hotel to write down the name of your destination in Chinese symbols. Without this information it is rare you will be able to communicate effectively with your taxi driver. Pre booked taxis get around this by having either an English speaking driver or radio link to an interpreter.

Aim for key landmarks:

In a city as big as Shanghai you can"t expect each driver to know every street. Especially when travelling to a different suburb it"s easier to ask for the main intersection or landmark nearby.
