Historical Museum Haarlemmermeer

In the Historical Museum Haarlemmermeer, you will find the history of the municipality of Haarlemmermeer starting from 1852. According to their website it is an interactive museum for all ages. The museum is located in the Haarlemmermeerse bos to the Bosweg in Hoofddorp. In the museum you can visit the on scale counterfeit village. In the museum you can learn a lot about the history of Haarlemmermeer in the field of agriculture, the daily life, the old market square and about the polder. For children there are special exploration routes through the museum. In addition, there are also fun games such as the ‘wooden-shoe-dance’ game and "cow milking" the children in the museum often have a lot of fun. In addition to the permanent exhibition there is also often a temporary exhibition in the museum. The museum is open from 1 April to 1 November from Tuesday to Sunday from 13:00 to 17:00. Between November and April 1st, the museum is only open on Saturdays and Sundays from 13:00 to 17:00. Corn Mill De Eersteling (the first one)

De Eersteling is a large stone flour mill built in 1856. The name originated because the mill was the first mill in the municipality of Haarlemmermeer. The mill is still in use as a flour mill and has since 2006 a new miller after the old miller retired after nearly 30 years. The mill is located on the Hoofdweg in the centre of Hoofddorp, and is open to the public since her renovation in 2011. It is open on Thursday from 13:00 to 17:00 and on Friday and Saturday from 10:00 to 17:00. It is also possible to make an appointment with the miller for any guided tours. In the mill is a wide range of baking products available as well as some souvenirs.

Wild Plants Garden De Heimanshof

Are you in love with the flora and fauna of the Netherlands? Then De Heimanshof is the right place for you! Since 1975 is the garden of about 1 hectare in use. The idea was to give people an image of the animals and plants in their natural environment. Garden tours are regularly organized and sometimes there are also lectures at De Heimanshof. In June, July and August are weekends with different activities. The garden is freely accessible for everyone, if you are with a large group and you want to make a tour you can make an appointment. The garden consists of several areas, so there are three greenhouses available, each with its own climate; a desert climate, a Mediterranean climate and a tropical climate. In addition there is a special world of flowers, a special bird watching spot, a special breeding place, different waters and a large piece of primeval forest. Shopping

The shopping centre of Hoofddorp is located in the East around the Marktplein and Beursplein. Hoofddorp has for a small-town like this a fairly large shopping centre; more than 300 shops. One of the major attractions is the Primark, a large shop which is known for its low prices. Apart from the Primark, there are also many other great shops like the Saturn, the Expo, the Hema, the H&M and V&D. The in 2011 opened shopping centre "The Markthof" is a very modern shopping center, in 2012 it won the prize as "the best shopping centre of the Netherlands".

In Hoofddorp are about 40 restaurants where you can enjoy a nice bite to eat. The restaurants differ a lot from each other so there are restaurants offering dishes from different countries; Dutch restaurants, Italian restaurants, Chinese restaurants, Indian restaurants, French restairants, Greek restaurants and many others.

Culinary specialities

Haarlemmeermeer knows no real regional dishes or products. Though they try as much as possible to use their own vegetables, fruit and dairy products. So they say on the website of Haarlemmermeer; "most of our daily food grows around the corner".

Arabesque

One of the restaurants in Hoofddorp is Arabesque; a restaurant with a lot of food from the Middle East. At the site “eet.nu” the restaurant is rated as the best restaurant in Hoofddorp with an average mark of a 9.0. A 3 course menu includes an appetizer, main course and dessert, and costs on average about €35,-. On Sunday, Tuesday and Wednesday, it is possible to eat unlimmited Mezzes for €17,50, these are a kind of tapas. The restaurant is very sleek and modern decorated according to their website, but they have also the real Middle Eastern atmosphere. Arabesque is located at the Kruisweg in Hoofddorp.

Bar Bistro Joseph is a French restaurant with Asian influences. Also Bar Bistro Joseph is one of the better restaurants in Hoofddorp according to “eet.nu”. In this restaurant you will pay about €45,- for a 3 course meal consisting of a starter, main course and dessert. It is possible to have dinner here with large groups if you book in advance. The restaurant is located on the Hoofdweg in the centre of Hoofddorp.

Tours of Hoofddorp

Transfers to and from the airport in Hoofddorp

Hoofddorp is very close to Amsterdam Airport Schiphol (AMS), it has a lot of options when it comes to airport transportation from Hoofddorp to AMS. In Hoofddorp are about 5 companies who are specialized in airport transport. The ride from Hoofddorp to the airport costs about 25 to 30 euros. One of the companies that offer airport transport is "Taxi 1275 Hoofddorp”. This company is located in the Centre of Hoofddorp to the Boschplaat. The company says on the website that they have professional and reliable drivers with all a "TX" mark and knowledge of Dutch, English and German language.
Another company who can drive you to the airport is "All4youtax", located on the Willemsbos in the West of Hoofddorp. They will bring you in a black Chrysler Grand Voyagers or an Audi A8 to your destination. At "All4youtax" it is not only possible to go to the Amsterdam Airport Schiphol, it is also possible to go to almost any other airports in Northern Europe.
Another company that specializes in airport transportation is "Taxi Hoofddorp Service", located at the Graan voor Visch near the station of Hoofddorp. "Taxi Hoofddorp Service" takes you for 25 or 27 euros from Hoofddorp to Amsterdam Airport Schiphol. It is also possible to travel with larger groups.

Walking tour of the city

Hoofddorp offers the opportunity to make beautiful bicycle tours. Thus, the VVV Hoofddorp a beautiful bike route marked of about 30 kilometers. In this tour you will pass the old "Fort of Hoofddorp" and of "Vijfhuizen " and you will cycle along the old mill "The Eersteling".

Nightlife

Hoofddorp is no city with many pubs and bars, but does have a well-known Pub. This pub is "Challenge 2.0". The pub was called to 2007: "Challenge" but after it was closed in 2007 it is reopened in 2009 under the name "Challenge 2.0". There are regularly well-known DJs such as "party squad" and "Afro Jack”. Hoofddorp has further just a few things to do in nightlife. It still has a new concert hall that is open since 2011; "Duycker" called and there are also some small pubs.
