With this suggestion of a tour by a hired coach or minibus through the province of Tarragona, you can visit some of the lesser known and most charming villages of the surroundings of the great Tarraco. Submerge your group into the land of sun, wine and the remains of an original roman villa.
The province of Tarragona enjoys the privilege of having a combination of history, landscape beauty and a delightful climate which have made it famous for its wines. The Roman imperial capital has all the fame, deservedly, because it belongs to Unesco’s World Heritage, but there are several villages in its surrounding which possess the charm of its architectural heritage as well as the possibility of enjoying quiet beaches and a cuisine that is certainly worth visiting.
The tour begins in the village of Altafulla, at seven minutes by minibus from the city of Tarragona. Tell your driver to drop your group at Munts street and to park the vehicle to pick you up at the same spot one hour later, approximately, in order to take you to the town council.
The site of the Roman villa of Els Munts is part of the important archaeological heritage of the province of Tarragona, and it is one of the largest in the Iberian Peninsula in its category. Its state of preservation allows you to see how was the residence of a senior official in the administration of the great Tarraco of the first century d. C. The winter opening times (from November to February) are from 10.00 to 13:00 hours and from 15.00 to 17:30 hours, on Sundays from 10:00 to 14:00 hours In summer (June to September) the Villa is open from 10:00 to 13:30 hours and from 16:00 to 20:00 hours, and on Sunday only in the morning from 10:00 to 14:00 pm. The rest of the year the timetable is from 10:00 to 13:30 hours and 15:00 to 18:00 hours. The entrance fee is €2.50.
After the visit to the Roman villa, you cannot skip the visit to the Vila Closa or the ancient walled village, declared of national interest by the Government of Catalonia. The set formed by the Church of Sant Martí and the Castle undoubtedly deserves the visit, as well as the promenade by the picturesque alleys of the medieval old town of this singular village.
No doubt after the visit to Altafulla you will be very hungry and tired! It is time to get on the bus and ask the driver to take you twenty minutes away from where you are, to the beach of Coma-Ruga. There, at the seafront, you can enjoy the delights of a typical Spanish cuisine in the Restaurant El Pingüino. You cannot spend a great day in Catalonia without enjoying some excellent sea tapas, precisely in front of the sea. In this location you can eat a varied menu of tapas for about € 15,-, or a menu with paella, drink and dessert for about € 20,-. Of course, you should accompany the meal with wine from the Tarragona land, since it is excellent, but do not forget that if it is summer there may be a crowd waiting for a meal at the restaurant, so it is advisable to try to phone previously.
It is certain that after the paella and tapas you will be eager to have a small nap, it is therefore time to tell your bus driver to take you, in fifteen or twenty minutes, to the village of Torredembarra, a route that you can use to close your eyes for a moment. Once in the destination you can enjoy a delicious bath in the Costa Dorada, on a beach of very fine sand and clean water; and you can also have a good ice cream as a snack while you walk around the village.
Once the bath and relax on the beach are finished, it is time to enjoy an ice cream cone while you enjoy a stroll around Torredembarra. The walk through the historic centre of the town is a delightful idea, with the highlights of the Town Hall, located at the Icarts Castle, a Renaissance building from the 16th century. Another building that is worth visiting is the Antoni Roig house, in modernist style. However, the greatest charm of the village can be found simply by wandering around its picturesque streets.
In Conca de Barberá Street, in the Centre of Torredembarra, you can find La Masia Restaurant. The food offered is the typical Catalan food, with high quality and well- served portions. They have a pretty satisfying menu for about € 20,-, which will certainly be of your taste. A dish that you should not miss is the cheeks of pork, the specialty of the place.
If your day trip started in the capital of the Tarragona province, you will have a short trip ahead of only fifteen or twenty minutes. If you have organized your trip with departure from Barcelona or Llerida then the trip by coach will take about an hour and a quarter.
Ask your driver to drive slowly and to take the curves with delicacy so that you can return enjoying a pleasant nap in your reclining seat, because after a full day of sightseeing, walking and bathing you will certainly be exhausted!
