City tour, walking and good food. During your stay in Madrid, you might want to visit the surroundings as well.
The following tour could be combined with the half day tour Round trip with chartered bus to travel back in time in San Lorenzo El Escorial, but you could also do one half day tour.
Madrid, Segovia, Toledo, Ciudad Real
The second half-day tour is a 1 hour and 10 minute drive from Madrid to Segovia or a 45-minutes drive from the San Lorenzo El Escorial to Segovia. The bus will pick you up from the chosen pick up point. Before or after visiting Segovia, you have the opportunity to drive to El Espinar. In El Espinar, you could go horse riding with company La Morada del Caballo through exiting and rough Spanish scenery. El Espinar is a small town but the surroundings are tremendous. After or before the horse-riding trip, you could travel to the impressive city Segovia.
Segovia will stay in your memory forever because of the historic atmosphere. The small streets and old buildings are impressive and recommended to view. First, you could visit the outstanding Alcázar. The Alcázar is located on top of a rock and has the shape of a boat. The purpose of the building was to be a fortress but eventually the royals have used it as a palace. When the building was not a royal palace anymore, Alcázar functioned as a prison and as a military academy. Furthermore, the architecture inspired designers of the Sleeping Beauty castle in Disneyland but it was also an inspiration for other reproductions.
After visiting the Alcázar of Segovia, we suggest to visit the cathedral of Segovia. It is a 10-minutes walk from the Alcázar and provides you with the opportunity to view the historic buildings along your way. The cathedral is located at the Plaza Mayor. This cathedral was the last gothic cathedral build in Spain and is often called the lady of cathedrals. The Cathedral must-sees are the chapels and the three impressive entrances.
After visiting the Cathedral, you might be hungry. Typical dishes in Segovia are lamb and pork and you will find these dishes easily as Segovia has many restaurants and bars. However, it is wise to make a reservation beforehand, as the gastronomy of Segovia is very popular. We recommend visiting restaurant as they are well known because of their way to split the pork. If you prefer a cheaper option, we suggest visiting Restaurante Bar San Martin, which is located at a small but beautiful square named Plaza San Martín.
After you enjoyed the delicious gastronomy of Segovia, you could decide to walk in 7 minutes to the aqueduct of Segovia, which has been built in the first century. In bygone days, this aqueduct functioned to transport water from mountains who were located 16 kilometers away. This amazing roman bridge is approximately 120 meters long and reaches a height of 28 meters.
After visiting the Aqueduct of Segovia, you could decide to go back to your accommodation or stay a little longer and drink a glass of delicious Spanish wine in one of the many bars in Segovia. Bar Restaurante Vinoteca La Tasquina offers delicious wines and is recommended by other travelers. Another option could be Restaurant Zarzamora, which is a small and cosy restaurant.
From Segovia it takes approximately 1 hour and 10 minutes to drive back to Madrid.
