You could decide to be picked up at your accommodation in the morning. From Madrid, we suggest you will drive to El Escorial. This trip to El Escorial will take approximately 1 hour. El Escorial is an impressive UNESCO world heritage site, which is absolutely a must-see. The purpose of El Escorial was to function as the grave of the father of Philip II. Furthermore, Philip II saw the El Escorial as a place in which he could be alone and speak only to his father and to god. El Escorial is a monastery and it is the cemetery of the Spanish kings. The size of El Escorial is impressive and consists of a church, library, monastery, royal palace and college. Furthermore, El Escorial is located close to the mountains, which offers you an amazing view. The average duration of a visit to El Escorial is between 2 and 3 hours but depends on how you would like to visit this interesting attraction from the renaissance.

Walking around in El Escorial

After visiting El Escorial, you might be in the need of a good cup of coffee or tea. Therefore, we advice to you to order a specialty coffee at Cafetin Croché, which is situated next to El Escorial. A few streets away from El Escorial, you could take a seat and have a coffee at restaurant El Caserio which offers great value for your money. For the ones interested in walking tours, we suggest to walk up the hill to visit Philip II’s chair (6.5 km). From here, Philip II could view the building process of El Escorial. Follow the signs: “Silla de Felipe II” and you will arrive at a point from which you can have an amazing view over the monastery/palace of El Escorial. The walk to Philip II’s chair and back to El Escorial takes approximately two hours.

Another beautiful option we suggest, is to visit El Fraile gardens and the Casita del Infante house. Go to the right of the monastery entrance and you will feel like you have travelled back to the 16th century when you arrive in the Jardines del Fraile gardens. After visiting the Jardines del Fraile gardens, you could walk through Paseo de Carlos III. After 15 minutes you will arrive at the Casita del Infante. Casita del Infante is a lodge which was used for small chamber concerts and informal meetings. From here you can also visit the Herreria park, which has beautiful landscapes. Furthermore, I would recommend to take the Calle Leandro Rubio to Casa de Jacometrezzo house. This house is so special because it is the oldest house in San Lorenzo el Escorial.

Lunch in San Lorenzo de El Escorial

After all these impressions, you could be hungry and so we advise you to walk into San Lorenzo de El Escorial for a delicious lunch. San Lorenzo has very good restaurants with good tasting food available. Restaurant La Cueva is an attraction in itself. The restaurant is situated in a 200-year-old building and 50 years ago, it changed into a Meson tavern. A cheaper option could be Tavolata Reale SL, which is a coffee bar, which offers good tasting lunches.

We suggest to ask the driver to pick you up in 2 hours.

After lunch, you could decide to view the cross of Valle de los Caidos (The valley of the fallen). At Valle de los Caidos is a big monument created for the people who died in the civil war. This monument is impressive because it consists of a 150 meters high cross which is build upon rocks. Furthermore, Franco his grave tomb is situated at the Valle de los Caidos too. We advice to read information about the political background of Valle de los Caidos beforehand, to understand the meaning of the location. We cannot confirm that travellers are allowed to enter the monument. Therefore, we advice to get in contact with the tourist information board of San Lorenzo del Escorial for information.
