About the history of Flevoland  

Cornelis Lely (1854 -1929) was a Dutch engineer, engineering, minister,
governor and politician. In 1891 he made a plan for the closure of the Southern sea. This plan was completed in 1932. There is a dam built between North Holland and Friesland. Because of the bridge, the Ijssel lake had been raised. Between 1942 and 1968, three polders reclaimed. These polders are now known as the Northeast, Eastern and Southern Flevoland. The capital of Flevoland, is named of Cornelis Lely Leleystad .

For the construction of the dam, Urk was an island in the southern sea. Because of the building of the three polders between 1942-1968, Urk is now located on the mainland . For the inhabitants of the island, Urk still feel like an island, for example, they do not live in Urk but on Urk.

By plane

To reach this province with a commercial flight you’ll probably land on Amsterdam International Airport (AMS). From there it’s onl;y a 40 minute drive to reach the capital of this province: Lelystad.

The province also has it’s own local Lelystad Airport (LEY). This airport is for scenic flights, training flights, aircraft rental and many other activities. For the business traveler, the airport is important.
From the airport there is the possibility to fly to other large or small airports. Lelystad Airport is working with: AIS Airlines, Heli-Holland, Aviodrome, Heli Centre, COBAIR and many other organizations.
Lelystad Airport is about 10 km from the city center. The airport is easily accessible by car, public transport, bicycle and boat. You can also choose to go by taxi.

On the road in Flevoland

Do you prefer to travel by car with driver, minibus or coach travel, Flevoland has an excellent road network which makes it a great opportunity. Flevoland is easily accesable because of a lot of highways; these are the A6, A27. The A6 runs from Muiderberg (Noord-Holland) through Flevoland to Joure (Friesland). The A27 runs from Almere outside through to Utrecht, Breda and Antwerp. This makes it easy to travel and visit places during a group tour or your holiday trip.

Nightlife in Almere

Do you want to explore the nightlife of Almere?
Anno Almere, is a nice bar. It is located in the center of Almere, every Friday and Saturday you can enjoy a cozy night with DJs. The minimum age is 21 years.
Another nice option is Wow nightclub, located in the Northwest. This nightclub is open every Saturday from 21:30 am to 5:00 o clock. The minimum age is 16 years. Before 23:00 the entry is free, after the entrance will cost € 5,-. Do you prefer a cafe? Then you can go to Cheers bar, located in the center of Almere. There is a friendly atmosphere. Every 1st Friday of the month there is a live performance.

What to see and do in Flevoland

Den Uylenpark

The Den Uylenpark consist of two parts, a petting zoo and a city-field.
The petting zoo is located in the center of Almere. Different animals run free and can be petted. For children there are different playgrounds. The park is run by a group of volunteers. Feeding of the animals by visitors is not allowed.

The city-field: schools can participate in this gardening project. For those on school trips easy to arrive bus or coach. Please note that this park is closed on Monday, Tuesday / Friday open from 10:00 to 12:00 and 14:00 to 16:00 on Saturday and Sunday it is open from 14:00 to 16:00.

The Early bird forest

The Early bird forest is a place where a tearoom, sheepfold, wooden playground and woodland are located. It’s a place where everybody could have some fun. This forest is one of the oldest forests in Almere. You can cycle and hike through the forest.

Sheepfold

In the sheepfold there are about 100 sheep which are eating grass. The main reason for having this sheep’s is to remove a plant, called ´Berenklauw´. For humans it is difficult to remove, this plant but sheep are eating them.

Do you want to go away from the sheep’s, you can visit the tearoom. It is a unique place to enjoy a cup of tea with homemade apple pie. Between the sheepfold and the teahouse is the playground. Parents can have a drink and watch their children. This park is open Monday / Friday from 10:30 to 16:30, Saturday and Sunday from 10:30 to 17:00. This park is located close to the highway A6. It is easily accessible by private transport.

Theater Almere

In this theater, there are a lot of various shows and performances. You can enjoy a great night with comedians, fantastic musicals, musical concerts and theatrical performances. Before or after the show, it is possible to have diner or drink in the restaurant which are very close. The theater also has a special architecture. bus and taxi companies all know this theater, so it is very easily accessible. It is situated in Almere city close the WeerWater. The weerwater is a recreation lake.

Artnivo is mainly concerned with the provision of art on the internet. They also have a private gallery in Almere. ARTnivo is working together with artists who offer their work for less money. They have several exhibits on display; these spaces are small so that visitors feel at ease there. The opening hours are Monday / Friday from 12:00 to 18:00.
