Visit monuments and old stones in the city of Aosta

Roman Bridge:

This beautiful stone bridge dates back to the first century before Christ, no less! The river passing below is currently dry, but the bridge is still object of contemplation. It is an obligatory stop on your bus tour. Your driver will know where to stop to take the best pictures.

Arch of Augustus:

It is the most emblematic monument of the city of Aosta, and it dates back to the year 25 BC, when the city was founded. The arch commemorates the victory of the Romans over the Salassi, and currently it is located at the entrance of the historic centre. The walk through the centre is the most suitable moment to park the rental minibus or coach and give a well-deserved or obligatorily break to the bus driver.

The cathedral:

Located in the beautiful square Giovanni XXIII, the Cathedral of Aosta dates from the fourth century after Christ, although its current appearance is the result of the renovations carried out in the 11th and 19th centuries. Apart from the plant and the architecture itself, the most interesting part of temple are the frescoes dating to the 11th century, and which can be visited since 2000.

Saint Orso Collegiate Church:

It"s the most important monument of the city. It was built on a cemetery, and from the fifth century the present Church was built but much of its current appearance is from the medieval period. Precisely from the medieval period is the cloister, undoubtedly the most important of the temple and which is really worth visiting. Their capitals are works of art, and in the cloister you can enjoy a very relaxing silence.

Pretoria Door:

In Roman times, this gate was the main entrance to the city. Like most of the doors of the time, it consists of a large main arch, where chariots entered the city, and two small arches on the sides, for the passage of people. The West part is perfectly preserved, and the marble that originally covered the door can be still distinguished in it. On both sides of the door there were two towers which still remain and which now serve for exhibitions.

Palace of City Hall:

It is in the square Emile Chenoux, i.e., in the centre of the city, and to change a little from Roman architecture, it is good to see a neoclassical, certainly beautiful building.

Eating the famous Fontina Cheese:

The Aosta Valley has its own variety of cheese, called Fontina Cheese, no doubt a delight that is worth trying. You can do it in a landmark of the city, the Latteria Pessina Donatella, where you have all the varieties of this cheese. Once you have soothed your hunger, you can relax having a drink in a terrace, provided that you have not chosen the winter months for your visit, naturally.

What to see and what to do in Aosta and surroundings

If you family or your group have already visited the capital of the region, but you have one day more before the end of the trip to Italy, here you have a series of ideas to organize some minibus or car with driver routes or excursions in the surrounding area. What is certain is that the vastness and views in these mountains and landscapes will be of your liking.

Visit the castle of Fénis

If you are lovers of the visits to castles, this will not disappoint you at all. Located in the town of the same name, it is a medieval building of the 14th century, which was home to a powerful family and, curiously, has a typically defensive situation. The visit is cheap, it only costs 5 euros, and it is really worth the visit because it has very interesting frescos, as well as various courtyards and rooms that are worthy of knowing.
