Taxis and Cabs in Udaipur City: comparison and prices in Udaipur

India"s most romantic city has none of the crazy traffic associated with the rest of the country. It"s a quiet desert city without the incessant honking found elsewhere. Private transportation is required to get out to a number of Udaipur"s outlaying attractions, including the famous Monsoon Palace.

You can compare taxi companies in Udaipur below, like Shriji Cabs in Vardhman Appartment, Chetak Cabs in Bhuwana and Falcon Cabs in Bada Ram. All these companies will offer half, full, or multi day taxi rental, as well as individual taxi journeys.

Private taxis / minicabs

Private taxis in Udaipur predominantly focus their business on the tourist market. They have a limited range of vehicles, with most being Tata or Maruti cars which can comfortably sit 3 passengers, but for longer journeys 4 is a squeeze. As a general guide you should look at around €1 for 5-6 kms or  €20 -30 for a full day, although this is very much dependent on the season. If you travel during the busiest tourist season (Noc – Feb) then prices will be more expensive than other times in the year.

Private taxi drivers can speak English and will have experience working with tourists. You can expect better service by pre booking than flagging down taxis.

Flagged Down Taxis

Udaipur has some taxis and they are mainly focused in the areas where tourists are. Like the Dabok airport (UDR), Udaipur Railway Station, and the main tourist sights. They use similar vehicles as private taxis although the driver may not speak as good English. If you get a taxi that uses a metre then rejoice! This is very rare in Rajasthan so usually you will have to negotiate for a price.

Tuctucs / Auto Rickshaws

Auto rickshaws are more common in Udaipur than taxis. You must negotiate for each journey but officially they should be around 50% cheaper than a taxi. Don"t think about getting a auto rickshaw up to Monsoon Palace. While it"s cheaper it"s a steep hill and with a few passengers the tuctuc will barely be going quicker than walking.

Top tips for getting a taxi in Udaipur

Agree a price first:

You stop a taxi, he knows the destination, you set off. Sounds simple. Except when you arrive the driver is likely to ask for a hugely inflated fare for the journey. Always make sure that a price is clearly agreed before you set off.

Negotiating:

If you don"t pre book a taxi you will have to negotiate a price. Bartering is part of Indian culture so you shouldn"t be put off by this. Longer negotiations usually result in cheaper prices.

Hotel commission:

Taxi drivers receive commission if they take you from the airport or train station to certain hotels. That commission is usually passed on to you by the hotel. The only certain way of avoiding this is to have your hotel pre booked and expecting you. If you have no accommodation booked then ask to dropped off near by and wait until the taxi has left before going in.

Where to find taxis and cabs in Udaipur

You will find many taxis and cabs near places where tourists are likely to be. For example at the airport, Udaipur Railway Station, beside the boat jetty, or down Udaipur"s central street of travel agents and hotels.
