Jodhpur, the Blue City, is one of India"s finest. With it"s quaint blue coloured houses and majestic fort it"s been attracting visitors for centuries. You"re on the edge of the Thar Desert and you"ve got a rented minibus with driver. It"s a situation that"s teeming with freedom. Which way do you go? West into the desert for camel rides and sand dunes. Or South to Udaipur and the palaces that were used for James Bond"s Octopussy movie. North to Jaipur, the Pink City? Or east to the ancient desert towns of Pushkar and Bundi. In Jodhpur you"re in the centre of Rajasthan"s web of attractions and the only question is how much time does your group have.

Jodhpur doesn"t have the same long list of attractions as its neighbours Udaipur or Jaipur. But it"s an extremely charming city and its main two tourist features are some of the finest anywhere. Perched on top of a huge mountain Jodhpur"s imperiously looks down on the city. From here you can see the extent to which locals have painted the buildings blue. You"ll need a half day to see the whole fort complex and you"ll be glad of a rented minibus with driver as walking up the mountain in Jodhpur"s infamous sun is sure to give your whole group heat exhaustion. From the fort your group can go by rented minibus to the Umaid Bhawan Palace and the marble Jaswant Thada before returning to the wonderful blue houses of the centre.
From Jodhpur you can travel direct to Udaipur (5 hours), the City of Lakes but it"s more enjoyable to make a stop at Mount Abu (4 hours), Rajasthan"s only hill station. After the blistering heat of Jodhpur you"ll be glad for the climb in altitude and decrease in temperature. On the other side of Udaipur is Chittorgarh, an old fort that can break your journey if you"re group is planning to make a loop back up to Jaipur.
Heading west you"ll travel through the Thar Desert on your way to Jaisalmer, a desert city with a golden sandstone fort built in 1156. Spend any time in the city and you"ll soon feel you"ve gone a few centuries back in time. Just 40km from here are a series of famous sand dunes which are your groups chance to go on a camel safari.
By rented minibus it"s a 6 hour drive to Jaipur, however there are a number of detours you will want to consider. Almost directly on route it Pushkar, an old desert town where legend has it that Lord Shiva shed his tears when his wife died. Further east is Bundi, a gentle oasis where the red desert earth meets the green tropical scenery of inner India.
