About the Girona-Costa Brava Airport

The Girona-Costa Brava Airport (GRO) is a satellite airport of the Barcelona-El Prat Airport. It"s located about 17 km from the city of Girona and is about 92 km north of Barcelona. Many of the travellers who arrive at the Girona-Costa Brava Airport  do so via low cost airlines such as RyanAir, Jetairfly, or Wizz Air, and then head out to any of a number of destinations in Costa Brava to enjoy a vacation of beaches and sunshine, or they may take a bus to Barcelona or Perpignan.

It"s a small airport with only one terminal, so it"s easy to find your way around.

Reservations for transfers and pickups at the Girona-Costa Brava Airport

In general, most normal taxis offer a car in good condition for a short trip such as going from the airport to downtown Girona. In any case, if you"re looking for a transfer from this airport to Barcelona or perhaps to the little towns along the Costa Brava, a ride in a private car or minivan with a driver will probably better suit your needs.

How to make transfer reservations for your trip to or from Girona Airport

You know it"s a lot more convenient to have a driver waiting for you at the airport, ready to help you with your bags and drive you around in a nice car. So if you would like to have a private car at your disposal to pick you up at the airport, you can fill out this transfer quote request form and get more information about the types of vehicles and prices that transfer companies offer you via our site.

You"ll receive multiple options for your ride with different types of vehicles with drivers at different prices. You can compare different local transportation companies and the ratings they"ve received from customers who have traveled with them in the past. After comparing your options, make your reservation online.

The advantages of making a reservation for your GRO airport transfer

There are many advantages to having the services of a private chauffeured car available and waiting for you at the Girona-Costa Brava Airport. For one thing, you"ll get to choose the exact type of car that best suits your needs and the luggage that you"ve brought with you. Another advantage is that the driver will be waiting for you at the airport and will help you with your luggage, so you won"t have to wander around feeling lost as you look for signs and try to figure out the best way to get to your hotel. Your driver will take you to your private car and all you have to do is get in and enjoy a worry-free ride.

Having a reservation with a previously fixed price will give you the peace of mind of not having to worry about whether or not a taxi driver will be waiting for you when you arrive or if he"ll purposely take a long route to your hotel so he can overcharge you. Finally, because your chauffeur knows that you"re going to rate him online, he"ll be motivated to provide you with the best possible service since a good review will help him to win more customers in the future. Your chauffeur will definitely go above and beyond to make you happy.

Group bus rides and transfers from the Girona Airport

When you"re traveling with a group of more than 7 people, it"s very inconvenient to have to find two taxis and split up the luggage between the vehicles. It"s better to reserve a mini bus prior to your arrival to Girona-Costa Brava Airport. By using the quote form, you can compare and choose from different transfer options. Buses of all sizes, from 12 to 80 seats, from various private transportation companies are associated with our website. Information about flights, arrivals, and departures from Girona Airport

By following these simple steps, you are guaranteeing yourself an efficient trip from the airport to your next stop: We recommend that you provide your phone number, flight number, and your arrival time to the transportation company that you decide on. That way, the driver can easily find you once you arrive at the Girona-Costa Brava Airport. Be sure to turn your mobile phone on as soon as your plane lands.

Organizing transportation after I"ve landed at the Girona Airport?

Taxis from the Airport at the arrival area:

Generally, the only option at the Girona-Costa Brava Airport is to take a legally licensed taxi. The Girona airport is small, so just follow the signs until you see a line of travelers in the area designated for taxis. In any case, you should know that you might find yourself in a very odd situation: that there might not be any taxis in the taxi area. In that case, you can call Taxi Girona at 872 975 000.

You can also try calling these two companies that offer airport shuttle services: Radio Taxi: +34 97 220 3377 and Tele Taxi: +34 97 222 2323

After you make your call, it will be about 15-25 minutes before your taxi arrives. Walk over to it, and in principle, with a little luck the driver might help you put your bags in the trunk.

Taxi costs at the Girona-Costa Brava airport:

You should always pay your fare once you get to your destination, never beforehand. When you get in the taxi, make sure that the driver starts the taximeter starts counting fractions of an hour in 5, 15, and 30 minute increments.

Additional costs for taxis to or from Girona airport

Entrance to and from the airport requires an extra €3.10 fee per taxi.

Once you get to your destination, the taxi driver will stop the taximeter and add €1 per suitcase if it exceeds the following dimensions: 55x35x35. So if you"ve got a handbag in the rear seats that doesn"t exceed these dimensions, this does NOT count as a suitcase.

The taximeter will show the minimum fare plus the cost of the route traveled.

If you want more information about approximate prices and ride times for taxi rides to various locations in the area, consult AENA"s official Girona-Costa Brava Airport taxi rates guide.

Distance and time for routes from the Girona-Costa Brava Airport to various destinations.

In general, plan on the trip from Girona Airport to the city of Girona taking about 25 minutes. A trip to Barcelona will take about an hour and fifteen minutes. If you want to go to the Barcelona airport, add about 30 more minutes. Getting to closer destinations like Rosas or Lloret de Mar will take about 30 minutes.

The amount of time that any given trip takes will depend on the traffic at the time. In the summer during rush hour (when a lot of people head to the beach), trips can take 30 minutes longer than usual.

The amount of time a ride from the Girona-Costa Brava Airport takes during rush hour

In general terms, rush hour coincides with the beginning and end of the work day and the school day.

Morning transfers

Rush hour starts at 7:30 and lasts till 9:30. So give yourself an extra 15-20 minutes to get to your destination.

Evening transfers

In the late afternoon and early evening children get out of school and their parents head out to pick them up from about 4:30 to 5:30. Then traffic dies down, but at about 6:45 the work day ends and everybody leaves the workplace to head out to the supermarket, the gym, or home. As you can imagine, the traffic gets a little crazy once again at this point. You can count on a 15-20 minute delay.

Summertime traffic

In the summer, during the months of July and especially in August, the highways of La Costa Brava are full of summertime vacationers. This migration of vast numbers of people causes traffic jams, most noticeably, from 11AM, when people go to the beach, to 2PM, when people are sunburned enough to go get a paella in the shade. So you should keep in mind that your trip might take an extra half an hour.

Finding your driver at the Girona Airport

Once you"ve retrieved your luggage and are ready to begin your trip from the Girona-Costa Brava Airport, you should find your driver and have him take you to your hotel or wherever you"re meeting your friends or starting your vacation at.

There are two places in the Girona Airport where you might find your driver:

a)    The "meeting area" on Floor 0, in front of the check-in counter. Because this is a small airport with relatively little traffic, it will be very easy for you to find it..

b)    At the exit of the baggage claim area in the big hallway, your driver might be waiting for you with a sign with your name written on it.

Public transportation to/from Girona Airport

At the Girona-Costa Brava Airport buses are the most economic means of getting to your destination.

There are two bus companies that operate at the Girona Airport: Sarfa and Barcelona Bus. The next few sections contain information on how to find your bus and fares for the most popular routes:

Trips from Girona Airport to Barcelona or Girona City

Company: Barcelona Bus. Per-person cost of a ticket to Barcelona: one way €12.00, return €21.00

For a ticket from the Girona airport to downtown, the ticket price per person is €2.50 one way and €4.80 for a return ticket
Schedule: http://www.sagales.com/index.php?Origen=cp315&Desti=88&secc=cerca

Trips from the Girona Airport to Lloret del Mar, Tossa de Mar, Blanes, Malgrat, and other towns.

The same transportation companies (Barcelona Bus, Sarbus, and Sagales) have various fixed routes servicing the various towns and cities of Costa Brava and other locations further inland. Ticket prices and schedules depend on the time of year and what town you"re getting off at.

Where to buy your bus ticket and catch your bus:

Once you claim your baggage and go to the open area of the Girona-Costa Brava Airport, you"ll see that there"s a ticket office in the arrivals area. You can bet that 80% of your fellow passengers will be heading there. At this ticket office you can buy tickets for any bus ride from the airport.

Ticket in hand, head outside the terminal. In 5 minutes you"ll be standing in line to catch your bus.

I"ve got some spare time on my hands at the Girona-Costa Brava Airport. What should I do?

On more than one occasion we"ve all found ourselves waiting for a delayed flight at an airport. Or maybe you"re one of those people who likes to have a long layover so you can check your luggage and find something to do before your next flight. If you find yourself in one of these situations, you might want to try one of the recommendations listed below to pass the time at the Girona-Costa Brava Airport.

Enjoy the Girona-Costa Brava Airport and nearby shops

The Girona airport is small and doesn"t offer large shopping areas. But we can suggest some options to make an hour or two go by more quickly. If you have more time, then we suggest that you leave the airport and venture out to visit some of the nearby towns.

Shops in the Girona-Costa Brava Airport

Get some perfum at Duty Free

There are some duty free shops in the Girona airport where you can get some of those perfumes that cost so much in the city at a reduced rate as well as some chocolates or bonbons to give to your friends back home. The Express Shop and The Shop are the two duty free stores in the departure area of the airport.

The latest sunglasses

You can also buy some sunglasses, in case during your trip home you get lucky and the sun peaks out from behind the clouds. At Sunglass Corner Outlet you can get brand name sunglasses at a very good price. The shop is located on Floor 0 of the open part of the departure area.

Something to read on your flight

If you"re the type of person who never manages to fall asleep during your flights, then perhaps the best way to forget about how narrow the Ryan Air sears are is to distract yourself with a book. Head over to Drivers and buy one of the latest best sellers of the season. Your next flight will be less stressful if you can focus your mind on something besides the turbulence.

What if I"m feeling a bit peckish?

Is there a tourist area anywhere in the world that doesn"t have a McDonalds? The Girona Airport is no exception and does offer some fast food in the departure area. Don"t expect RyanAir to give you so much as a tiny bag of peanuts on your flight, so if you"re hungry, one option that we"re all familiar with is McDonald"s.

If you"re worried about experiencing the "aftereffects" of a hamburger and ketchup during your flight, then go to Caffriccio; a cup of coffee and a little snack are a good option while you wait for your flight to start boarding.

Excursions outside the Girona-Costa Brava Airport

If you"ve got 4 hours or more until your next flight, the wait at the airport can really drag on. So, depending on whether or not you"ve got bags to carry, you might enjoy some of the various options for spending some time outside the airport described below.

Drop off your bags? Not a chance

It"s a real pain, but many of AENA"s airports have had to curb their expenses recently, and in the case of the Girona-Costa Brava Airport, they"ve had to do away with the luggage lockers. So if you"re traveling with more than one suitcase and you"re carrying more than just a handbag, you really need to think about how you"re going to pass the time till your next flight. But don"t worry, there"s a solution to everything. So people don"t think you"re a bum walking around with your belongings in a shopping cart, we"ve selected some options that might be very useful to you. On the other hand, if you prefer to be free of your bags, talk to the people at the Sallés hotel. They will take your luggage. Keep reading to find out how.

If you"ve got bags, the best option is to relax at a hotel or beach

When traveling, luggage has a tendency to slow us down and sap our energy as we lug it around and are forced to keep an eye on it. So if you"ve got enough free time, the best option is to catch a taxi and head to a hotel in the area to relax.

Hotel Sallés Aeroport de Girona

This is one of hotels in the area that is best prepared to deal with travelers. It"s just 1 km from the airport, and you can relax in a beach chair by the hotel"s pool. With a little luck, you can improve your tan a little before catching your flight back to the cold countries of northern Europe or a city like Amsterdam or London where the sun never comes out. Having a flight delayed was never so enjoyable. Just be careful not to miss your flight and end up as a permanent resident of the province of Girona.

If you prefer to burn some calories, then head to the gym. Also, they offer free wifi throughout the entire building as well as a free airport shuttle service (only to the Girona airport). When you arrive at the airport, all you have to do is call 972 477 940 and they"ll come pick you up.

When you land at the airport get in a taxi and give the driver these directions: Hotel Sallés on caretera Nacional 156, km 0.6, Riudellots de la Selva (Girona). The telephone number is: +34 972 47 79 40

The Vichy Catalan Spa

Taking care of your mind and body is always a good thing. Located 7 km from the Girona airport, at the Balneario Vichy Calalán hot springs center you can enjoy these experiences and so many more.

Here are their hours of operation:

Monday through Friday from 10AM to 2PM and from 4PM to 9PM

Saturday from 9AM to 9PM

Sundays from 9AM to 2PM and from 4PM to 8PM.

The Balneario Prats Hotel

If the Vichy Catalan spa is full, then take a taxi ride to their main competitors: the Hotel Balneario Prats. It"s located at Plaça Sant Esteve, 7 de Caldes de Malavella, 11 km from the airport. So you can get there in 10-15 minutes. Put your bags down and relax in one of their heated pools. Or perhaps all the traveling and strange beds have given you some back pain. If so, try the mud treatment: this localized treatment is based on mud and minerals from the earth that bring a pleasant warmth to the targeted area.

It"s best to call and make a reservation before heading to their facilities: 972 47 00 51

If you"ve got only light bags, then you can opt to go to the beach, go golfing, or visit the city of Girona

The best thing about having extra free time at the Girona-Costa Brava Airport is that are innumerable activities that you can enjoy to while away the hours. Below are some great options for a variety of tastes and budgets: everything from going to the beach for some sunbathing to eating at the best restaurant in the world.

Beach and golf at Platja d’Aro

If you"re lucky enough to be traveling light, get in a taxi at the airport and tell the driver to take you to Platja d"Aro. In this little coastal town near Girona you can go to the beach, go for a swim, and enjoy some sunbathing, or, if you"d prefer to do something active rather than lying in the sun, then you can practice your swing at Maralar Golf.  In just 30 minutes you could be enjoying these activities. Rent the necessary equipment at their facility, and if it"s dinner time, they have a restaurant for the golfers.

Restaurante La Calma

If, on the other hand, you prefer to go somewhere else or you"ve opted to head to the beach, if you"re hungry and have enough time, go to a restaurant called La Calma Chill Out at Passeig Marítim, 62 de Platja d’Aro. They offer high quality tapas and Spanish dishes with a Catalonian-French fusion. If you want to guarantee yourself a table, make a reservation by calling 972 825 913.

A walk through the city of Girona

Maybe you"re not in the mood for sports but you also don"t want to get sunburned. In that case, just taking a walk and enjoying a little town like Girona might be your best option to kill some time instead of sitting around at the Girona-Costa Brava Airport.

Transportation from the airport to the Girona Cathedral

In 20 minutes you can get to this location in northeastern Spain, with its imposing cathedral and Jewish quarter (El Call). The best option is to have the taxi driver drop you off near the cathedral and then walk to Plaza Mayor. At the start of your walk you"ll have to kiss the lioness"s ass. That"s no joke. It"s true. Right by the stairs that go up to the cathedral on the right hand side there"s a small column with a sculpture of a lioness on top. They say that you should kiss her hindquarters if you want to return to the city or if you want to have some wish fulfilled. So if you see a tourist performing this silly act, don"t laugh, instead, do the same. Every tourist should take the time to participate some local rituals...

Head towards the Jewish quarter and the Eiffel bridge

Once you"re done with that (and have take the obligatory photo of yourself in the act), visit the cathedral or head towards the Jewish quarter. This part of Girona has several signs showing you how to get to the most popular spots in the city, so just follow the signs. After visiting El Call, walk to and cross over the bridge designed by Monsieur Eiffel. Yes, the same Eiffel who designed the famous tower in Paris. Be sure to get a photo of yourself standing on the bridge.

Partying in Girona may cause you to miss your flight

In Girona, as in many Spanish cities, there are a lot of festivals and entertainment events. You should check the official Tourism in Girona website to see what"s going on. Just be careful that you don"t get so absorbed in the festivities that you get back to the airport late and miss your flight home.

Enjoy some good food at Celler de Can Roca

How does catching a ride to the best restaurant in the world sound to you? The Roca brothers" Celler de Can Roca, located in Girona, has taken the place of Ferran Adrá"s El Bulli as the best restaurant in the world. A good option for killing some time is to visit this temple of gastronomy. Eat the world, if you dare. We"re not yanking your chain, that"s the name of one of the first dishes that you"ll have the opportunity to try. It consists of a paper globe that contains 5 flavors that represent different countries. This mixture of flavors from Mexico, Lapland, China, Morocco, and Lebanon is a unique treat. It"s located at 48 calle Can Sunyer. If you want to make sure that you get a table, call ahead of time at 972 222 157.

No tables at El Celler de Can Roca?

Don"t worry, if you called them and they"re full, or perhaps they"re a little outside your budget, then we recommend the following more economical option to enjoy a good, modern meal at an accessible price in Girona. El Restaurante Massana at 10 calle Bonastruc de Porta will offer you a variety of delicious foods along with fine wine and desserts. Since you might be on a tight schedule to get back to the airport in time, make sure you call and make a reservation so that you don"t have to stand in line +34 972213820

And if you want something fast and reliable, head to calle Marqués de Caldes de Montbuí, 87. At the Restaurante Corsaro Els Químics you can enjoy the best pizzas in the city of Girona.
